The president of the United States continues to lay siege to American cities, and as Donald Trump himself has said, it feels like there's a war happening on American soil. Militants from the federal government are waging a war on the populace.
It's not a civil war, and I don't think we are heading in that direction, but it is an act of violent political persecution. Anyone who's paying attention can see that ICE is the president's paramilitary force. They're being deployed against Americans that the president does not like, and what is happening has nothing to do with law enforcement or keeping the peace.
ICE isn't large enough to terrorize many cities at once, so they've been doing a sort of tour of left-leaning population centers. Today it's Minneapolis, tomorrow it might be somewhere else. The administration is diligently working to recruit more ICE agents to increase the scope of what we're seeing. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the agency hired over 12,000 ICE agents over the course of its first year in office, and it plans to recruit thousands more.
What the president is doing here should be seen as an affront to the Constitution and an unforgivable transgression. Too often, Trump's actions are "sanewashed," as people frequently call it, and people equivocate when describing what he's doing at any given moment. This should not be allowed in this instance.
This attack on our cities by ICE and Customs and Border Protection is an abomination. It is a deliberate act of cruelty that will not be forgotten, and it is a stain on this country's reputation.
Furthermore, it should be seen as a warning of what might be to come. Donald Trump is currently threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act to further escalate what is happening in Minneapolis by getting the military involved. Of course, this administration has been itching to invoke that law for some time.
